Former Man City defender Vincent Kompany could be set for Premier League return

Former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany could be set for a first managerial job in the Premier League. Kompany is the leading candidate to be named as Burnley's new manager if the Clarets can secure their top-flight survival over the next few days.

But a deal to bring the 36-year-old in from Anderlecht is thought to be dependent on Burnley avoiding relegation to the Championship. They face a trip to Aston Villa tonight and finish their campaign on Sunday against Newcastle at Turf Moor.

Burnley are currently in the bottom three but tonight’s trip to Villa Park is a game in hand on Leeds, who are one point above them, and due to their superior goal difference four points from those two fixtures will be enough to secure a seventh successive season in the top flight.

The Clarets sacked Sean Dyche in April after more than nine years in charge at Turf Moor and although the decision looked controversial at the time, caretaker boss Mike Jackson has steered the side to three wins and a draw from his six games in charge.

Despite Jackson’s success - he won the manager of the month award for April - Burnley have always planned to appoint a permanent manager this summer and Kompany is top of the list if Premier League status is secured.

The Belgian is a City legend after making 360 appearances in his 11 seasons at the club, winning 10 major honours.

He decided to leave the Etihad at the end of the 2018/19 season to become player-manager at Anderlecht. In August 2020 he hung up his boots but signed a four-year deal to remain as head coach.

Anderlecht have won 42 of Kompany’s 91 games in charge and they have finished third in the regular season for the second year in a row.

The Belgian domestic season finishes with a round of play-off fixtures, with the league split into sections, and Anderlecht play their final game of the campaign on Sunday.
