Former Love Island winner Greg O'Shea qualifies for Olympics with Ireland 7s team

Former Love Island winner Greg O'Shea is going to the Olympics after his Ireland rugby 7s team booked their ticket to Tokyo today.

The Limerick man said it was the "stuff of dreams" after Ireland shocked France to win a final qualifying tournament in Monaco.

O'Shea, 26, will be part of the first Irish rugby team to ever compete at the Games.

Ireland won all four of their pool stages matches to reach the semi-final where they saw off Hong Kong.

They were then the underdogs in the final against France, but a sensational performance saw them win 28-19 and make history.

It was a remarkable tournament for Shannon RFC clubman O’Shea who was only called into the squad last week to replace the injured Gavin Mullin.

He said after the match: "I'm honestly speechless. This is the thing of dreams. This is the pinnacle of sport and we did it.

"I'm so proud of the boys. I'm not even supposed to be here. Initially I wasn't even picked and now I'm standing on the pitch."

Terry Kennedy, one of the stars for Ireland, said: "It’s incredible, it’s something we’ve kind of dreamed of for the last number of years, especially the last 15 months.

"We’ve worked really hard as a squad, stayed together when there haven’t been any tournaments around. It’s all paid off at this stage."

The Olympic Men’s Rugby Sevens competition will take place from July 26-28, with Ireland joining teams from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Great Britain, Japan, Kenya, Korea, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA.
