Former Liverpool star Mark Gonzalez sends emotional message to fans after suffering heart problem

Former Liverpool star Mark Gonzalez has sent a message to fans as he recovers at home following a heart issue.

Initial reports suggested the ex-Reds winger had suffered a 'heart attack' and was taken to hospital in his native Chile.

His wife Maura Rivera posted an update on Instagram yesterday speaking of the "shock" the family had been given following "days filled with uncertainty".

And in a new message last night, Gonzalez himself took to the social media platform with an emotional video of thanks to all supporters.

The 36-year-old said: "Hi guys, how are you? I want to thank all of you for each one of your messages of support, love and good vibes on what happened.

"I had a mild pericarditis [inflammation of lining around heart] - you can Google it and read more about it.

"I really appreciate each one of your messages. It makes me strong and makes me come out of these tough moments.

"But I am at home thank God, with my family. Thank you very much for the love and support I receive every day.

"See you around and thanks a lot."

On the Instagram post from Gonzalez, there were messages of support from a huge number of fans and players.

Jerzy Dudek posted: "Amigo! Can’t believe! One of the fittest player in the team, including @jariiseofficial. Be positive and take care champ".

And Sami Hyypia sent his best wishes with a heart emoji.

Gonzalez joined Liverpool back in October 2005 but they were initially unable to obtain a work permit for him and loaned him out to Real Sociedad.

This was eventually granted the next summer and he went on to make 36 appearances for the Reds, scoring three times before returning to Spain to join Real Betis in 2007.
