Former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt in line for first senior management role

Former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt is set to make the next step in his managerial career and take charge of Dutch side ADO Den Haag, according to recent reports.

Daily newspaper AD claim the 41-year-old will be announced as the new manager of the Eerste Divisie side as early as Thursday. The club missed out on promotion to the top flight after a penalty shootout defeat to Excelsior on Sunday.

Their general manager Edwin Reijntjes confirmed earlier this week that discussions with Kuyt had taken place, as he told the media: "I do not deny that Dirk Kuyt has been spoken to. I can also say that there will be a press conference here this week in which the new coach will be presented."

The former winger joined Liverpool from Feyenoord in 2006 and spent six years with the club before he departed for Fenerbahce in 2012. He made over 280 appearances for the Reds and scored 71 goals.

He retired at the end of the 2016/17 season, despite a brief spell in the third tier of Dutch football with Quick Boys a year later. He spent two years as manager of Feyenoord's under-19 side but left the role in June 2020.

This will be his first role in senior management and he will no doubt be tasked with going that step further and earning promotion back into the Eredivisie. ADO Den Haag were relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2020/21 season.
