Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso agrees to become Borussia Monchengladbach manager next season

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has agreed a deal to become manager of Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.

Alonso, 39, is currently in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team in Spain but he will to move to Gladbach when his contract his contact there expires.

The Spain legend will replace Marco Rose, who last month signed a deal to become Borussia Dortmund manager next season.

Alonso, who won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern in Germany, took his first steps into management with Real Sociedad’s B team in 2019.

Earlier this year he was linked as one of the favourites to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool when the Reds were struggling.

Gladbach were challenging for the Champions League places before Christmas but they have dropped to 10th in the Bundesliga after poor run of results.

Before beating bottom club Schalke 3-0 at the weekend, they had lost seven straight matches and were beaten 4-0 on aggregate against Manchester City in the Champions League last 16.
