Former Liverpool FC player Gary McAllister breaks silence after 'losing three teeth' in sickening attack

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has spoken out after he was assaulted last month in a city centre attack .

The former midfielder was  rushed to hospital  after being punched in the face outside a Leeds city centre bar on Sunday, March 24.

The ex-Scottish international  was on a night out when the attack  took place just hours after he watched  Liverpool Legends  play at Anfield on Saturday.

The 54-year-old lost three teeth and had plastic surgery on his lip which needed 12 stitches, according to former teammate Dominic Matteo.

But earlier today Mr McAllister confirmed to talkSPORT that he is 'on the mend'.

He said: "It was a bit of a shock to the system as you can imagine. But I'm full on the mend and it's nice to be back on the bench alongside everyone at Rangers.

"The club were brilliant so to be back on the sidelines against Hearts and Motherwell for two victories was good.

"What I would like to say, at times football gets a bad rep but it's been quite humbling the support from everybody in football.

"I have had lots of messages and I can't thank people enough.

Last week, West Yorkshire Police said a 32-year-old man arrested on Thursday night (March 27) had been released under investigation.

Mr McAllister has worked alongside Steven Gerrard as the assistant manager at Rangers since the former Liverpool captain was appointed in 2018.

The Scot played for  Liverpool  under Gérard Houllier from 2000-2002, playing in the team that won the treble in the 2000-01 season and was instrumental in his side clinching the UEFA Cup that year.
