Former Lions coaches Jim Caldwell, Jim Schwartz among those with chances to get Redskins job

Now that the Washington Redskins have fired head coach Jay Gruden, the jockeying begins for who will be the next coach. Washington owner Daniel Snyder has never been shy about chasing big names or making surprise choices, so the field appears to be wide open.

A couple of the names getting some early discussion are former Lions coaches. Jim Caldwell and Jim Schwartz are both in the second tier of potential hires as listed by BetOnline.

Caldwell, who was let go by the Lions after the 2017 season, has 18-to-1 odds for the Washington position. Caldwell managed a winning record during his four seasons in Detroit and also coached the Indianapolis Colts to the AFC Championship in 2009.

Schwartz checks in at 20-to-1. The current Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator did an admirable job taking over the winless Lions in 2009 and getting them to the playoffs in 2011.

The favorites for the job include Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Byron Leftwich and (interestingly) current Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.
