Former Irish League boss Liam Beckett "not buying" Mick McDermott's Co Antrim Shield final complaints

Former Irish League manager Liam Beckett says he's "not buying" Mick McDermott's complaints about next week's Co Antrim Shield final.

Glentoran boss McDermott has says his club have considered pulling out of Wednesday's decider against Larne.

He has voiced concerns over player welfare after the Shield was pushed back 24 hours, saying both teams would have less recovery time ahead of their scheduled Premiership games next Saturday.

McDermott has also questioned holding the final at Seaview which has an artificial surface similar to what Larne play on at Inver Park.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster, former Cliftonville manager Beckett said: "I can't really buy into that.

"A lot of people will say that nowadays, about playing two games in a week.

"For me, you want to go and speak to a person working on a building site, eight hours a day, five days a week. Ankle deep in clabber, as we would say, and then talk to me about someone who is jaded.

"These are athletic footballers, and for the life of me I can't understand how they can't play two games in a week.

"I think the surface maybe doesn't please Mick either. Obviously Larne play on a synthetic surface, and this final being played at Seaview is to their benefit."

Beckett added: "We are seven games into the season. We have all been starved of football, and already I am being told of players being jaded? Give me a break.

"I tell you something, they should get down on their bended knees to the man above and be thankful they are able to play this great game called football.

"Two games in a week? Get on with it and play."
