Nov. 05--Former Illinois state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and his wife, Jo, last month paid $2.6 million for a six-bedroom, 6,500-square-foot mansion in Old Town.
A banker by training, Giannoulias, 39, was treasurer from 2007 until 2011. He unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate in 2010, losing to Republican Mark Kirk, and today is an executive at BNY Mellon.
Giannoulias and his wife bought the home from Deneeta Pope Thompson and her husband, Michael. Pope Thompson achieved national fame in 2012 when media identified her as the college girlfriend that then-U.S. vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan had spoken about in an interview.
Built in 2013, the brick and limestone house has five full baths, two half baths, a Control 4 home automation system, three family rooms, radiant heated floors in each bathroom, a master suite with a separate steam and spray shower and air tub, a penthouse family room and guest suite, a nearly 1,300-square-foot roof deck with an outdoor kitchen, a kitchen with Viking appliances and an island, and a lower level with a media room, a fireplace, a guest suite, a wine cellar and a second family room. Outdoor features include a deck and a heated driveway.
The house had been listed for $2.749 million and was reduced in August to $2.65 million.
Kieran Conlon of Conlon real estate, who represented the Giannouliases, declined to comment. Alexi Giannoulias did not respond to a request for comment.
