Former cricketer Vinod Kambli crashes into car in Mumbai, held for drunk driving

MUMBAI: Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli (50) was arrested on Sunday for drunk driving. He had crashed into another ex-Indian cricketer’s wife’s car parked on the building premises and then brushed onto the compound wall of a residential building in Bandra (West) before he was intercepted by a police patrolling van near Lilavati Hospital.

Kambli was caught barely 100-metres after he sped from the residential building in his sedan (Honda City) around 12.30 pm. The Bandra police said Kambli was also booked for drunk driving. He was later released on bail as no one was injured in the incident. His blood samples have been sent for an alcohol test.

The entire drama began on Sunday past noon when Kambli, allegedly drunk according to the police, left his home. “Kambli was caught immediately when the police control room received a message about him speeding on the building premises after crashing into a parked SUV (MG Hector) that belonged to ex-cricketer Ramesh Powar’s wife Tejaswini. She made the call to the control room on noticing that Kambli had left the place after crashing into her car before brushing the compound wall and speeding away,” said an officer of the Bandra police station.

At the time of the incident, Kambli was alone in the car and his car was intercepted 100-metres from the building near Lilavati Hospital where the police patrolling van caught him on receipt of the message relayed through wireless.

DCP (Zone IX) Manjunath Singe said Kambli has been booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving on a public way), 336 (endangering life or safety of others), 427 (mischief), and under Motor Vehicle Act section 185 (driving by a drunken person).
