Former Chiefs CB Patrick Surtain joining Sam Madison on Dolphins coaching staff

A former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback is joining ex-cornerback coach Sam Madison on the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff.

The Dolphins hired Madison away from the Chiefs to become their cornerbacks coach and pass game specialist earlier this week. Now, they are set to hire Patrick Surtain as a defensive backs coach. Not to be confused with his son Pat Surtain II, who plays for the Denver Broncos, the elder Surtain was a former second-round draft pick by Miami in 1998 out of Southern Missississippi. He played seven seasons with the Dolphins before the Chiefs traded for a second-round draft pick ahead of the 2005 NFL season. He’d go on to play three seasons in Kansas City before retiring.

Surtain and Madison both crossed paths as players in the Miami secondary, where they played together from 1998 to 2004. Surtain will likely fill a similar role as Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt has since 2019, working primarily with safeties.

Surtain — like Madison before he joined the Chiefs in 2019 — has never coached at the NFL or collegiate level. He does have coaching experience and success at the high school level though. Since 2016, Surtain has been the head coach of Plantation American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. He’s led the Patriots to three state championships (2016, 2017 and 2020). Surtain was also awarded the High School Football America National Coach of the Year award in 2020.
