Former Cardiff City striker Gary Madine signs with Blackpool on free transfer

Former Cardiff City striker Gary Madine has joined Blackpool on an 18-month deal after being released from Cardiff just last week.

The 29-year-old, who had a brief stint with the Seasiders in 2015, heads back to Bloomfield Road on a free transfer.

The striker was signed to Cardiff from Bolton Wanderers for £6m back in January 2016, however he failed to score during his two-year stint at the Bluebirds. With 18 months left to run on his Bluebirds deal, the 29-year-old - who failed to score in 28 games across all competitions for Cardiff - was released from his contract last week and left Cardiff City Stadium by mutual consent.

But he has already found a new club in League One side, Blackpool.

Blackpool chief Executive Ben Mansford said: "Owner Simon Sadler has been incredibly supportive in helping to make this deal happen.

"Gary was our number one striking target in this window, so we are absolutely delighted to bring him back to Blackpool. He has a fantastic record at this level and we firmly believe he will help us realise our ambitions as a Club. Welcome back, Gary."

Bluebirds manager Neil Harris said at the time of Madine's release: "I think if the club thought there was value in selling him, they would have like to have sold.

"They got to a stage where it was best for the club and Gary to part ways.

"I enjoyed working with him and he did well for me. Sometimes, time is everything and family as well.

"Gary is a North East lad and sometimes family has to come first.

"If the club could have recouped some of the money they paid they would have liked to have done, but circumstances dictated what happened.

"My support goes to Gary and it’s probably the right decision all round."
