Former BNP leader Nick Griffin makes embarrassing gaffe as he tries to insult Leeds

The former leader of the British National Party made an embarrassing gaffe when he tried to insult Beeston.

Nick Griffin tweeted a photograph of a poster for a 'Muslim women only' fitness classes and claimed that it was in a shop window in the Beeston area of Leeds.

The self-titled 'white rights fighter' wrote: "This is in Beeston, Leeds - the place that produced the 7/7 Bombers. You'd think the powers that be would learn, but no, they just keep using our taxes to excavate an even deeper hole."

Almost an hour later he admitted the photograph was taken in the town of Beeston in Nottinghamshire.

He wrote: "Correction - It's Beeston, Nottingham, which hasn't yet produced any suicide bombers. The point, however, generally applies."

Mr Griffin was the leader of the far-right British National Party between 1999 and 2014, but he was expelled from the part months after he stepped down.

He also represented North West England in the European Parliament between 2009 and 2014.

His first tweet refers to 7/7 bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, and Shehzad Tanweer, 22, who both grew up in Beeston.

Ed Carlisle, who has lived in Beeston for 18 years and run various community projects, said: "Beeston has its challenges, like any inner-city community.  Bad things have happened, and still happen - but we're not defined by those events.

"Indeed, I and many local people love it here: ours is a vibrant community, jammed with businesses, community groups, events, and more.

"And the very wide range of people here get on pretty well most of the time: mixing, collaborating, sharing life. Like in 2005, the current crisis is bringing the best out of people: we're looking out for one another, and making good things happen."
