Former ballplayer Bret Boone puts Rancho Santa Fe estate up for lease

Jan. 08--Former Major League Baseball player Bret Boone has put his estate in Rancho Santa Fe up for lease at $38,000 while lowering the asking price for the property by about $1 million.

The single-story Tuscan-style house in a gated community returned to the market in November for about $9.5 million. It's now listed for sale at $8.499 million, according to the Multiple Listing Service.

Boone, who played 15 years in the major leagues, bought the property in 2004 for $1.955 million, property records show. The 12,521-square-foot custom house with eight bedrooms, eight full bathrooms and four half baths was completed in 2008.

Among its features are a great room topped with beamed ceilings, a chef's kitchen, a game room/bar, a home theater, his and hers offices and two laundry rooms. A formal wine cellar boasts a glass-enclosed wine cellar and seating for 16 people.

Retractable walls of glass bring the outdoors inside.

Outdoors, the grounds of more than two acres center on a resort-style swimming pool with a beach entry, raised spa and waterslide/grotto. A tennis court, a play yard, a covered pavilion and a one-bedroom guest house complete the grounds.

Nina Wells, the wife of retired baseball pitcher David Wells and Realtor with Keller Williams, is the listing agent.

The 46-year-old Boone has ties to Southern California having starred at USC and before that at El Dorado High School in Placentia.

The slugging second baseman spent the majority of his career with the Seattle Mariners and the Cincinnati Reds, hitting 252 home runs while making three all-star teams. He retired in 2006.
