Former Arsenal man Mikel Arteta in the running for the vacant managerial position at Brighton

Former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta is in the running to take over from Chris Hughton as manager of Brighton and Hove Albion, according to the early bookmaker odds.

Hughton was sacked on Monday morning, despite helping the Seagulls to survive Premier League relegation for a second season running. Although the poor form in the second half of the season would have caused alarm bells to ring for Brighton's Chairman.

According to website Oddschecker, Arteta is currently priced as low as 14/1 to take over at the Amex Stadium.

The clear favourite for the job is Swansea manager Graham Potter, who is priced as low as 1/3.

Mesut Ozil speaks out about his Arsenal future after a mixed first season under Unai Emery

Arteta spent five years as a player at the Emirates Stadium, playing 150 games for the club before retiring in the summer of 2016.

The Spaniard has since impressed in a coaching capacity, and is currently under the stewardship of Pep guardiola as assistant manager to newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City.

He has been linked with a number of managerial positions, including taking over from Arsene Wenger last summer before the appointment of Unai Emery.

It is thought that it won't be long until the former midfielder makes the step up and takes over the reigns at his own club. Whether that will be at the AMEX stadium, we will just have to wait and see.
