Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has been interviewed for the job vacancy with League One strugglers Southend United, as they continue their hunt for a new manager.
The former England international was most recently at League Two side Macclesfield Town, steering the club to an unlikely escape from relegation last season.
The 45-year-old left in August on mutual consent and issued a statement regarding his surprise exit.
"Macclesfield Town provided me with a great beginning in the managerial side of the game, as well as a fantastic learning curve which I am truly grateful for," he said.
"I would like to thank all the players and staff for their support during my time at the Moss Rose and also all the loyal fans, whose belief at the end of last season ultimately played a tangible role in our success."
Campbell has since been searching for a new role ever since, which has led to Southend approaching him to take the reigns.
"Sol is a passionate, eloquent individual. One can perhaps understand why Sol succeeded against the odds at Macclesfield," Southend chairman Ron Martin said.
Former Manchester United, Barcelona and Celtic striker Henrik Larsson is also in the running for the post, along with ex-Southend defender Adam Barrett and Gary Waddock, the latter of whom is currently in temporary charge as caretaker boss.
Should Campbell secure the job, it is likely he will bring former Manchester United striker Andy Cole and ex-Ipswich Town defender Hermann Hreidarsson as part of his backroom team.
