The horsepower wars may be over in the supercar world, but in trucklandia, the numbers keep climbing. Not satisfied with “only” 720 horsepower in the F-150 Raptor R, Ford decided there was room for more, way more. Possibly a preemptive answer to the returning Ram TRX, the Blue Oval’s supertruck now boasts a ludicrous 900+ hp.
The project vehicle is on display at SEMA this week alongside an amped-up Maverick with only a third of its big brother’s output. Upgraded with Ford Performance Parts, this “next evolution of off-road dominance” uses a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger to extract an extra 180+ horses. Torque figures haven’t been revealed, but expect a healthy bump over the stock 640 pound-feet.
There’s a catch, though. While the souped-up Maverick is headed for production next year, Dearborn isn’t committing just yet to this extreme F-150 Raptor R. For now, it’s labeled as a “potential Ford Performance Parts” package. Should it reach production, the upgrade would come with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty, provided it’s installed at a Ford dealer or by an ASE-certified technician.
Even if the power bump remains a forbidden fruit for now, all the other goodies showcased on the SEMA truck are available. The F-150 Raptor R flaunts a gloss carbon fiber package and a Borla cat-back exhaust with black chrome tips, along with a full suite of Rigid off-road auxiliary lights.
As for the 1500 TRX, it’ll likely compete initially with the standard F-150 Raptor R. The TRX’s comeback could happen as early as next year, slotting above the inline-six RHO. The outgoing version packed 702 hp, but knowing Ram's modus operandi, it’ll likely aim to one-up Ford. After all, the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 belts out 797 hp in the Challenger Hellcat Redeye and an even higher 807 hp in the SRT Super Stock.
