Ford CEO: Manual Mustang Isn't Going Anywhere

THE BREAKDOWN:

  • Ford CEO Jim Farley told the media the automaker is committed to offering a manual transmission in the Mustang.
  • Ford currently offers a six-speed manual transmission in Mustang GT models equipped with the 5.0-liter V8.
  • Ford dropped the manual for the Mustang EcoBoost with the launch of the S650 generation.

The manual transmission, like sedans, isn't dead. They are just not as popular as they used to be, and it happens. Tastes change, and new trends emerge, but not every automaker is willing to cave to peer pressure, like Ford. The American automaker has zero plans to ditch the manual gearbox in the Mustang anytime soon.

According to a report from CarExpert, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently told Australian media, "Out of our cold, dead hands will we not have a manual Mustang."

Ford offers a six-speed manual transmission in Mustangs equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 engine. The automaker dropped the manual gearbox option for the Mustang EcoBoost with the arrival of the S650 generation in 2024, which is only available with the 10-speed automatic.

The manual gearbox might not be as efficient or as quick compared to some modern automatics, but having the ability to shift your own gears isn’t about pure speed. People prefer feeling that connection that no dual-clutch could ever offer because it serves a different purpose—and Ford understands that.

Motor1’s Take: Ford’s commitment to the manual transmission ensures its cars remain fun and engaging. While the manual is a must in the Mustang, Ford also offers a seven-speed manual in the Bronco, another popular enthusiast vehicle.
