Footballer cleared of GBH over alleged headbutt on opponent

A man has been acquitted of headbutting an opponent in the face at a seven-a-side game leaving him with a gash that needed seven stitches.

Christopher Chappell was accused of butting Christopher Lewis in the face during a match at PlayFootball in Swansea in April last year.

Mr Chappell denied inflicting grievous bodily harm when he gave evidence in his own defence saying he may have inadvertently made contact with Mr Lewis during a confrontation between the two but did not intend to hurt him.

The 46-year-old was found not guilty following a two-day trial at Swansea Crown Court .

The court heard Mr Lewis suffered an injury after being substituted towards the end of a game between teams Filco Foods and Six Footballers and a Fat Boy.

The prosecution case was that Mr Chappell had tapped Mr Lewis on the shoulder and headbutted him in the face as he left the pitch.

Chappell, of Amanwy, Llanelli , denied that. He told a jury he had tried to speak to Mr Lewis about some of the aggressive tackles he had put in during the match but that Mr Lewis had become aggressive towards him.

He said a scuffle had ensued involving several players during which he felt a number of blows landing on him and during which he "swung" his arms around to defend himself.

He told the court he could not rule out the possibility that he may have made contact with Mr Lewis.

Chappell was found not guilty of unlawful wounding.
