• Tony Mowbray didn't get much help from Rangers during his troubled spell at Celtic, but it was a former Gers striker that got his reign at Middlesbrough off to a flying start. Kris Boyd scored after 30 minutes as Middlesbrough took an early lead against Bristol City. But it wouldn't be a Mowbray side if they didn't look good for a while before capitulating and that happened today: Middlesbrough ended up losing 2-1. Of course, it's unfair to suggest Mowbray could have had much influence on his players after only a few days in charge. But what you can't argue against is that Middlesbrough are still in trouble: the only thing keeping them off the bottom is goal difference.
• At the other end of the table, Cardiff were 2-0 up after 12 minutes, while QPR were relatively cumbersome, taking 32 minutes to score their opener against Burnley. It got a whole lot more cumbersome as Graham Alexander scored the 845th penalty of his career and the game ended in a draw. Cardiff now top the table by two points and perhaps most impressively they beat Norwich, one of the better sides among the chasing pack.
• The obligatory thriller of the week in the Football League came at Reading v Doncaster. Doncaster were 3-1 up with half an hour or so to play. It ended 4-3 to Reading – they've now scored eight goals in the last two games.
• Who exactly do Tranmere think they are? Laughable no-hopers at the start of the season, a draw against Brighton a few weeks back showed they have some potential. Then came last week's 4-1 thrashing of fellow bottom feeders Walsall. This week they scored four goals again as they beat the neutral's favourite, MK Dons, 4-2.
• Some tremendous displays of ill-discipline throughout the Football League today. Oxford, Aldershot and Plymouth were all reduced to nine men. Most impressively, Plymouth actually led their game for a while although Oldham went on to score two late goals to make it 4-2.
• In League Two, Port Vale and Bury were the winners at the top: they won while Chesterfield could only draw. At the other end of the table, Hereford United's caretaker manager, Jamie Pitman, is in danger of getting the job full-time. He started with two draws and a win and today things got even better as his team thrashed Stockport 5-0. They're still lurking near the bottom of the table but on this form they could be within touching distance of the play-offs before too long.
