Football finance expert sends out warning to Leeds United over EFL's £50m aid package

Leeds United would use up the emergency cash provided by the EFL in just over two weeks, according to a football finance expert

The EFL released a £50million short-term relief fund in order to help clubs with cash-flow issues following the coronavirus pandemic.

The £800,000 that will be paid now is an advance on the Premier League payment which is due to all clubs at the end of the season.

On top of that, teams in the Championship will also be able to apply for a £584,000 interest-free loan.

But according to studies by Kieran Maguire, a football finance expert who teaches at the University of Liverpool, the Whites would use up the funds in just 16.1 days.

Maguire shared his findings on his Twitter account.

In a tweet containing the graph of data, Maguire wrote: "Based on their most recent wage levels, this is how long it will take (in days) for Championship clubs to consume the advances & grants given by the EFL, and that's ignoring other costs incurred by clubs."

The data shows that the club in the Championship that would run out of cash quickest is Stoke City.

The Potters are estimated at taking just nine days to consume the money, shortly followed by Fulham (9.3 days) and Swansea City (10 days).

The club who would effectively make the money go the furthest are Barnsley, who Maguire chalks up at 47.7 days - almost seven weeks.

In effect, Maguire's findings show that only two clubs in the division - the Reds and Charlton (35.8 days) - would make the advances last for more than a month.

Leeds currently sit top of the Championship, having won their last five matches, with nine games of the regular season remaining.
