Defeated A-League grand finalists Western Sydney Wanderers face a nervous wait to hear of any possible sanctions after Football Federation Australia vowed to investigate the ignition of flares in Wanderers’ supporter bays before and during Sunday’s match at Adelaide Oval.
Two flares were let off, one before kick-off and one just after Pablo Sanchez scored Adelaide United’s third goal late in the game, effectively sealing the result and securing a first A-League title for the club.
“It’s certainly something we’ll need to look at, because we’ve said very clearly over the last few months that flares are not on,” FFA boss David Gallop said in Canberra on Monday.
“It is something in the wash-up today and over the next few days we do need to have a look at.”
Wanderers were handed a $50,000 fine for the unruly behaviour of their fans in February this year. The club was also hit by a three-point deduction, which was suspended for a period of 12 months.
The latest indiscretion raises the possibility of Wanderers beginning next season on minus-three points.
Adelaide won the grand final 3-1, thanks to goals from Bruce Kamau, Isaias and Sanchez.
