Football fan in court charged with throwing bottle at Celtic physio during Old Firm clash leaving him 'disfigured'

A man accused of throwing a bottle at a member of Celtic’s backroom staff during the Old Firm clash at Ibrox has appeared in court.

Alan Crawford appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court today, where he was accused of assaulting Daniel Friel during the Parkhead side’s 2-1 win over Rangers on April 3.

The 32-year-old's charge alleges that he assaulted Hoops physio Friel by throwing a bottle towards him during the cinch Premiership match “causing it to strike his head to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement”.

Crawford, from Grangemouth, did not submit a plea when he appeared before Sheriff Iain Fleming.

He has been released on bail, and will appear again at the court on a date yet to be confirmed.

We previously told how the second half of the match was delayed after a glass bottle was thrown onto the pitch from the stands during a separate incident.

Broken glass littered the playing surface in the goalmouth of Celtic keeper Joe Hart, with Ibrox ground staff forced to come onto the pitch and remove the shards.

Celtic went six points clear of their Glasgow rivals after coming from behind.

Aaron Ramsey had given Rangers an early lead, but Tom Rogic levelled soon after for the visitors.

Cameron Carter-Vickers scored what proved to be the winner shortly before half time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are aware of a glass bottle being thrown on the pitch at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow during the Rangers v Celtic match on Sunday, 3 April, 2022.

"Enquiries are currently ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
