Fog on the Tyne as Met Office warns of poor visibility during the Friday rush hour

Friday morning got off to a foggy start with a last-minute weather warning issued in the early hours.

The Met Office issued the yellow alert for fog in the north and east of England just before 4am.

The warning lasts until 10am with public transport disruption expected and a possibility of flight delays and cancellations.

Forecasters say the fog patches will be dense in some places with visibility less than 100 metres at times, leading to difficult driving conditions.

The fog should slowly lift through the morning to leave a mostly cloudy day.

A further weather warning is still in place all day on Sunday across the country as Storm Ciara is expected to bring heavy rain and widespread gales.

The low-pressure system has been developing in the North Atlantic and is heading eastwards towards the UK and Ireland.

Over the weekend, wind gusts will widely reach 50-60mph across many areas, with gusts of 80mph or higher at the coast and exposed locations.

Before Storm Ciara arrives, high pressure will bring largely fine conditions to most of the UK.

It should stay dry with bright spells on Saturday but winds will strengthen ahead of Storm Ciara.

In the wake of Storm Ciara, it is forecast to remain unsettled and very windy across the country.

It is also expected to turn colder with wintry showers and ice as we head into the new week.
