Flybe collapse: 'We don’t comment on rumour' say airline believed to be teetering on brink

Flybe flights are operating as normal in and out of Edinburgh Airport today, but that may well change as there are fears the budget airline Flybe is teetering on the brink of collapse - with management locked in talks to avert it.

If the airline goes under, 2000 jobs could be lost. It's believed that Flybe employs some technical staff based in Edinburgh. They fly to 18 destinations from Edinburgh, including places like Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, Heathrow and London City.

Flybe, is the largest regional airline in Europe and has put accountancy firm EY on standby in the event of the worst case scenario, according to Sky News.

The move comes less than a year after the company, whose headquarters are in Exeter, was bailed out by a Virgin Atlantic led consortium of buyers.

The government is said to have warned of the risk that up to 2,000 jobs could go if the airline collapses.

Several departments - including the Department for Transport and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy have been examining if the government could provide emergency funds to prevent a collapse.

On Sunday night, Flybe said in a statement on Twitter: "Flybe continues to focus on providing great service and connectivity for our customers, to ensure that they can continue to travel as planned.

"We don't comment on rumour or speculation."

Earlier in the day, the company tweeted about its January sale with up to 15 per cent of 500,000 selected seats.

The company began operating 41 years ago and handles more than half of the UK's domestic flights outside of London.

It flies from Manchester Airport to Aberdeen, Inverness, Edinburgh, Exeter, Jersey, the Isle of Man, Newquay, Belfast City and Southampton, as well as a host of European routes.

Flybe has 75 aircraft serving more than 80 airports across the UK and Europe.
