Flu cases continue to escalate in the Lexington area

Central Kentucky Influenza cases are on the rise. Fayette County is reporting its first flu-related death this season.

Fayette Health Department Spokesman Kevin Hall said the county’s first death tied to flu occurred last week in a person over 100 who also had COVID. Hall said that’s not to diminish the seriousness of the diseases since it occurred in someone 100 plus While flu cases traditionally peak in January or February, Hall admits this is a peak of sorts in the influenza season.

“What we’re seeing throughout Lexington right now is a marked increase in flu cases. We had 95 new cases this past week, which is the most in one week,” said Hall.

Hall says those flu cases are anticipated to rise even further in the coming weeks.

“We anticipate seeing the numbers both for flu and for COVID to go on the rise for the next two three four weeks simply as people are gathering, they are going to be with family and friends,” said Hall.

Hall noted COVID is still circulating with 221 new cases last week, not counting rapid or home text kits. Hall added the CDC is recommending a return to masking for people in crowded indoor areas or around high-risk individuals. And vaccinations for those who not immunized. And Hall said vaccines for both flu and COVID are readily available.
