Floods on Central Motorway, A19 and Tyne Bridge cause rush hour misery

Standing water on the roads is causing rush hour traffic problems after a night of heavy rain.

The North East was battered by gale conditions overnight and the relentless rain has continued into the morning.

There are hazardous driving conditions on some busy roads caused by multiple flood incidents.

Traffic is moving slow on the Central Motorway A167(M) Southbound at A1058 Jesmond Road.

Tailbacks have also been reported on the approach to the Tyne Bridge on the Gateshead side, with traffic backed up to the flyover earlier than usual.

A slip road on the A19 had to be closed entirely earlier this at A1290 Downhill Lane but has reopened now.

The rain is expected to last well into the morning but should clear by 11am and make way for a more pleasant day.

Wednesday should remain dry according to the Met Office and, while some wet weather is forecast for Thursday, there is nothing as severe as Monday night forecast this week.

We'll have all the traffic updates throughout rush hour in our dedicated blog .
