'Flights to Dhaka, Bangkok from Agartala soon'

GUWAHATI: Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Pratima Bhoumik on Saturday said international flights will start operating from Agartala airport to Dhaka and Bangkok soon.

She made the statement while attending the commissioning of the new integrated terminal building of the Maharaja Bir Bikram airport. She was among the first passengers to embark at the terminal on Saturday. The integrated terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 4.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said the tag of international airport will be a reality once the mandatory clearance comes. Agartala will be the third international airport in Northeast after Guwahati and Imphal. Agartala will be directly connected to Chittagong in Bangladesh soon, they said.

Bhoumik told the media, "I am delighted to be a part of this historic moment and very fortunate to travel among the first passengers."

The minister expressed happiness over the commissioning of the terminal for the people of Tripura.

During the inaugural function on January 4, Modi had said that Tripura had the potential to become the gateway to the Northeast to usher in all-around development of the region and the airport will help to achieve this objective.

The newly developed terminal building is considered to be one of the best in the region. The AAI officials said it will be a delight for the passengers to board and disembark from the new terminal building and experience the beautiful ambience.
