Flight delays may affect holidaymakers as floods and storms hit Spanish destinations

Flash floods and storms have battered the south coast of Spain and could affect travellers.

Gale-force winds and heavy rain have caused a number of airports to close.

Palma airport in Mallorca was closed for over an hour on Friday morning due to strong storms, Dubin Live reports.

This led to both incoming and outgoing flights being forced to stop.

Flight diversions to Barcelona have caused a number of delays there.

Michael O'Hanlon and his wife Emer have been staying in Gran Alicant, about 15km south of Alicante.

The grandfather of seven said: "The storm is like nothing I've ever seen before.

"The promenade in Alicante has been destroyed, while a tornado ripped through nearby Gaurdemar, which has been all but wiped out.

"It rained non stop all day yesterday, for 24 hours  and hundreds of homes have been damaged, with flood waters running houses like rivers.

"A year's rainfall has fallen in just one day. It's unreal.

"Sadly, we heard that two people died a little north of here near Orihula, when their car was swept into a river.

"I've never seen anything like this in Spain before and we've been coming here for years. It's terrifying."

Flights to and from Ibiza airport have also affected by the storms and Almeria airport was also forced to close.
