Five things we loved from the new His Dark Materials trailer

It's time to step through to a whole new fantasy universe.

Well, if we just forget about the movie The Golden Compass.

The upcoming BBC and HBO co-produced adaption of the His Dark Materials novels by Philip Pullman is almost upon us and we now have a lengthy new trailer to enjoy.

The series stars Logan actress Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, a young orphan living at Jordan College in Oxford who becomes entangled in a battle of wills between some very powerful figures.

This war will have major consequences and not just for Lyra's world but for multiple universes.

Here are some things we enjoyed from the new trailer, which also stars James McAvoy , Ruth Wilson , and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

His Dark Materials trailer: Five things we loved

1. Meet polar bear king Iorek Byrnison

(YOUTUBE/BBC)

Here he is! Despite being absent from the majority of the promotions for His Dark Materials, we finally got a look at armoured polar bear and rightful King of Svalbard, Iorek Byrnison. The bear causes some chaos in the footage, but we still do not know who will be voicing the character.

2. James McAvoy ruffles feathers as Lord Asriel

(YOUTUBE/BBC)

Scottish actor James McAvoy appears in the footage as Lyra's adventurous uncle, Lord Asriel. The trailer makes it very cleat that Asriel will fight for "truth and freedom" but that means clashing with the ruling figures of Lyra's world. Is Asriel about to start a war?

3. It's a whole new world

(YOUTUBE/BBC)

Speaking of Lyra's world, the new trailer gave us a gorgeous glimpse of the parallel universe, with the aircrafts and futuristic touches being added to a more traditional-looking Oxford. The show will be moving away from the more Victorian aesthetics, however, in an attempt to update the series even further.

4. Ruth Wilson is deliciously creepy as Mrs Coulter

(YOUTUBE/BBC)

We love Ruth Wilson and are already mourning her turns in Luther and The Affair, but now the British actress has the dynamic role as Marisa Coulter in the new series. The glamorous figure comes to care for Lyra but hides terrifying plans for children in the Arctic, along with secrets that connect to Lyra's past and future.

5. Lin-Manuel Miranda is giving us his best cowboy as Lee Scoresby

(YOUTUBE/BBC)

The Broadway genius Lin-Manuel Miranda takes on the role of aeronaut Lee Scoresby, who becomes a vital ally to Lyra once she heads on her adventures. The trailer shows Miranda speaking in his best South-Western accent, following on from his cockney voice in Mary Poppins Returns.

We can't wait to see the rest of the series!

His Dark Materials is released on BBC One in the UK later this year.
