Nov. 08--Five people were injured after two cars crashed early Saturday morning in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.
Four of the injured people were in serious-to-critical condition after a dark Dodge Caravan and a Mercury Sable collided about 1:40 a.m. in the 5400 block of West Chicago Avenue, according to police and fire department officials.
According to preliminary information, both cars were driving eastbound when the Dodge Caravan rear-ended the Mercury Sable, said police spokeswoman Amina Greer. The Mercury then hit a brick wall on the north side of West Chicago Avenue, and the Dodge struck a streetlight pole on the south side of the street, Greer said.
Two people were transported to Stroger Hospital, where they were listed in serious condition, and two people were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were also listed in serious condition, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Juan Hernandez. One other person was taken in good condition to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, he said. No other details were immediately available.
At the scene of the accident, police officers blocked off about one block of West Chicago Avenue with yellow tape between Long and Lotus avenues.
The dark Dodge Caravan stood, mangled at the front, next to the streetlight pole. The top part of the light post was broken in half and hung vertically, slightly swinging in the wind.
