Five Manchester United greats nominated for induction into Premier League Hall of Fame

Gary Neville, Andy Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick are the five Manchester United greats to be nominated for induction into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Arsenal legends Tony Adams and Sol Campbell, Chelsea's garlanded trio of Petr Cech, John Terry and Ashley Cole, former Liverpool strikers Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, Manchester City hero Yaya Toure and one-time goalscorers Les Ferdinand and Jermain Defoe have also been shortlisted.

Neville made his United debut in 1992, claiming eight Premier League winners' medals in a professional career that almost spanned 20 years. Neville captained United from November 2005 until his retirement in February 2011.

Cole became United's club record signing with his shock transfer from Newcastle United in a £7million deal in January 1995. Cole still jointly holds the Premier League record for goals in a single season, having struck 34 times for Newcastle in 1993-94.

The striker lifted the Premier League five times with United before he joined Blackburn for £6.8m in December 2001. Cole tallied 187 Premier League goals for Newcastle, United, Blackburn, Fulham, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

Ferdinand was another club record recruit at £29.1m from Leeds in July 2002 and the centre half first got his hands on the Premier League trophy in 2003. Ferdinand was at the heart of Sir Alex Ferguson's last great United side which secured three consecutive Premier League titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Ferdinand won two more titles in 2011 and 2013.

Vidic arrived from Red Star Belgrade in January 2006 for a knockdown £7m and formed a formidable partnership with Ferdinand. Vidic was the United captain when he hoisted the Premier League trophy for an unprecedented 19th English title in 2011.

Carrick moved to Manchester six months after Vidic from Tottenham for a lofty £18.6m but proved to be a classy addition. The former England international won every significant honour in a 12-year career at Old Trafford, where he retired in 2018 to assume a first-team coaching role under Jose Mourinho.

Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel and Wayne Rooney were inducted into the Hall of Fame in the last two years. Ryan Giggs, winner of 13 Premier League titles, has still glaringly not been inducted.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger became the first managerial inductees on Wednesday.
