Five forwards Newcastle could target as they look to solve problem position

Steve Bruce is on the hunt for a new forward for Newcastle United this summer.

The Magpies are said to have a transfer budget of around £35million to play with in the transfer window as the club deal with the financial impact of COVID-19.

Newcastle are also in the market for loan players and bosman signings as Bruce looks for a box-to-box midfielder and a new forward at the very minimum.

Republic of Ireland international midfielder Jeff Hendrick is set to join on a free transfer after leaving Burnley at the end of last season but Bruce is still on the hunt for a new striker.

Between Joelinton, Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto scored just six Premier League goals between them and nine goals between them in all competitions, and Bruce is keen to address the lack of goals up front.

With that in mind, here's a look at five forwards Bruce could turn to this summer.

Callum Wilson

Wilson is on the Magpies' wishlist as previously reported by ChronicleLive, and is expected to leave the Cherries following their relegation to the Championship.

However, the financial uncertainty prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic means United are not expected to make a quick move for the 28-year-old.

Tottenham and West Ham are among the Premier League rivals credited with an interest in the four-cap England international, who has a very solid goalscoring record in the top flight.

Wilson has scored 30 Premier League goals across the last three seasons but new Cherries boss has warned they won't sell him for a cut-price fee.

Bournemouth have already sold Nathan Ake to Manchester City for £41million this summer, while Aaron Ramsdale is on the verge of an £18million move to Sheffield United.

Josh King

Wilson isn't the only Bournemouth forward Newcastle have been linked with.

The Magpies have a long held interest in Norway international Josh King, who almost re-joined Manchester United in January.

The 28-year-old caught the attention of a number of top clubs after scoring 16 goals during the 2016/17 Premier League campaign and he also hit double figures in the 2018/19 season.

King is in his final year of his contract at the Vitality Stadium but there is said to be interest in him from a host of Premier League clubs, as well as clubs in France, Germany and Italy.

Rhian Brewster

Newcastle are one of six clubs who have checked out the possibility of loaning Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster.

The 20-year-old scored 11 times at Swansea during a loan spell in the second half of last season and Liverpool are considering handing him a first team squad role next term.

But the likelihood is he'll leave to get Premier League experience, and Newcastle are one of a clutch of top flight clubs who are keen.

Aston Villa, Brighton, Burnley, Fulham and Crystal Palace are also credited with an interest, along with Norwich, Bournemouth and Watford.

A season-long loan move is a possibility for Brewster, who has won the under-17 World Cup at international level.

Chris Wood

Newcastle United and Southampton are both interested in Burnley striker Chris Wood - according to the Sunday Mirror.

The title claims the New Zealand international is valued at £13m by the Clarets.

Newcastle have been keen on Wood in the past after he scored 27 goals for Leeds in the 2016/17 Championship campaign that saw the Magpies end as champions.

Wood, who has scored 38 goals in 107 appearances during his three seasons at Burnley, is also reportedly being watched by Lazio who are competing in next season's Champions League.

Ollie Watkins

Newcastle are understood to have an interest in the highly-coveted Brentford forward.

The 24-year-old scored 26 goals last season for the Bees as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, losing out to Fulham in the play-off final.

It's understood Brentford are looking to bank a Championship record fee for Watkins - in excess of £16million - but would be prepared to deal with Newcastle. Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Leeds have also been linked.
