Fitness app Strava stops some free features used by runners, cyclists and walkers from today

The fitness app Strava has announced that some of the free features on the app are coming to an end, in a bid to get more people to pay.

Starting today (May 19), a few of Strava's free features, which it says are especially complex and expensive to maintain, like segment leaderboards, will become subscription features.

The enhanced training packages (Premium and most recently Summit), will be retired with subscribers being able to access all additional features.

Strava says its app subscription plan will mean money can be reinvested into building more and better features.

Strava have added that a free version of the app will always exist, it just won't include as much features.

Subscription is £4 a month.

In a statement, the company said: "Dedicating Strava to the community is also a commitment to longevity. We are not yet a profitable company and need to become one in order to serve you better.

"And we have to go about it the right way – honest, transparent and respectful to our athletes."
