'Fit' mum, 22, died after going into cardiac arrest while giving birth to son

A "fit and well" mum died after going into a sudden cardiac arrest during childbirth as medics delivered her son alive.

Paige Bradbury-Price, 22, was found unresponsive in the early hours of August 11, 2020, after feeling "hot and stressed" the night before.

An inquest held at Nottingham Coroners' Court heard the young mum was 36 weeks pregnant with her second child and was otherwise a "fit and well young woman".

Medics from the air ambulance service and East Midlands Ambulance Service crews were called to Ms Bradbury-Price's address in Long Eaton area of Nottinghamshire.

Her partner had called emergency services while another family member carried out CPR, NottinghamshireLive reports.

Ms Bradbury-Price had been in cardiac arrest for 12 minutes before paramedics arrived and they treated her in the bedroom of the house before being she was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre where she sadly died later that morning.

The inquest heard resuscitation efforts stopped at 2.58am but a decision was made to deliver her baby at 1.57am by a perimortem Caesarean section - a procedure which is carried out on a expectant mum in late pregnancy who is cardiac arrest.

Paramedics continued efforts to resuscitate Ms Bradbury-Price after her son was born.

She was pronounced dead as 6.20am.

Assistant Coroner Dr Elizabeth Didcock described the delivery as "the right thing to do".

The baby boy responded well to resuscitation efforts and was taken home from the QMC shortly after being admitted.

The inquest was told that a a perimortem Caesarean section was a "very rare" procedure.

Bosses from the air ambulance service noted that those involved in Ms Bradbury-Price's care were likely "stressed and traumatised" as a result of the incident, which was described as "almost unprecedented".

Dr Didcock concluded: "There are no issues of care that caused or contributed to Paige's death. My conclusion is therefore that of natural causes.

"Finally, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to all the family for the loss of Paige."

The coroner ruled that Ms Bradbury-Price had died from natural causes and a medical cause of death was given as unascertained.

It was also found that there were some inaccuracies

One member of the family previously told the inquest: "Thank you for everything you did there. It was such an unusual and rare case. I know how much it affected us but I know it affected everybody there that night.

"We lost Paige, but we have also gained a gorgeous little boy.

"That is down to the people who were there that night who made that happen. We would just like to say thank you."
