First supermoon of 2020 to be marked at Mussenden Temple

The first supermoon this year will be marked with the launch of a lunar themed art installation at Mussenden Temple.

The moon-themed display and dark sky experience comes from the JamesPlumb studio and is being launched by the National Trust this weekend.

A snow moon is expected to fill the sky in the early hours of Sunday with 'Silent Light' launching later on the ninth.

A National Trust spokesperson said: "In the twilight hours, under a veil of darkness, visitors will be encouraged to embark on a silent walk across the cliff top to Mussenden Temple, guided only by torchlight.

"Within the Temple, an installation of the artist's ‘Stained Moons’ artwork awaits.

"Stained Moons’ is an installation of light and shadow, evoking the eight phases of the moon. The images are found within the broken glass reclaimed from an abandoned greenhouse.

"Stained by time, the artists have selectively and delicately removed layers of lichen and dirt from the panels, leaving precisely formed spheres and crescents intact.

"In parallel, a constant reviewing, stacking and combining of the panels creates the moon images. Optical instruments created by the artists are then used to project the images onto delicate hanging screens inside the Temple. The elusive and distant moon is brought near."

Silent Light starts at Downhill Demesne from February 9-23 this year. Tickets are now on sale and must be booked through the National Trust website in advance.

The cost for adults is £7, children £3.50 and a family pass is £17.50.
