First picture of Perth 'hammer' death victim as police launch murder probe

Police have released a picture of Perth 'hammer' death victim Ian Menzies and launched a murder probe.

Emergency services were called to a property in Scott Street around 8.50pm on Monday, June 7, following a report of a concern for a person.

Officers found Ian, 55, within the property and they are treating the death as murder.

Cops say they are following a positive line of enquiry

Ian's heartbroken family have been informed and have issued the following statement: “Ian was the best Dad, Grandad and brother in the world.

"He was caring, respected and loved dearly by friends and family. Words cannot express how sorely he will be missed.

"As you can understand, this is a traumatic time for us as a family. Although we appreciate your messages of support we would like to respectfully request our privacy at this highly sensitive time.”

Earlier we told how a woman was heard ‘screaming in the street’ after Ian's body was found inside the Perth block of flats.

Forensic officers were seen examining the buzzer entry system to the block of flats on Wednesday afternoon while a police guard remained in place.

The back of the property, which includes a bin storage area and a car park, was also blocked off with a large cordon.

It is understood that Mr Menzies appeared to have sustained head injuries and the focus of the inquiry has centred on a known individual from a nearby psychiatric hospital.

The police are seeking to trace the man, who was known to Mr Menzies, and who had been a resident patient at the city's Murray Royal psychiatric hospital.

It is understood the man who is being sought in connection with the incident had previously been detained in the secure facility at Carstairs Hospital before being moved to Murray Royal.

One neighbour told the Daily Record: “We were watching TV when we heard this woman screaming in the street. She was on a proper tirade.

“That’s when we looked out the window and saw all the police. They’ve been there ever since. The CID have been round all our doors asking us if we saw anything.

“That block does have a lot of visitors coming in and out at all hours of the day. I’m led to believe it's one of the ground floor flats where it happened.”

Three bunches of flowers have been placed at the entrance to the affected block and include a photograph of Ian with two women.

Detective Inspector Gary Winter, of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team, said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of Ian at this extremely difficult time and they are being supported by specialist officers.

"Anyone who believes they may have information relevant to the investigation is asked to email scdholmesdundee@scotland.pnn.police.uk or telephone using 101 quoting reference number 3859 of 7 June, 2021."
