First picture of driver killed in horror crash in Perth and Kinross

A driver killed in a horror crash in Perth and Kinross on Saturday has been named locally as John Carswell.

The 47-year-old, from Arbroath, was travelling in a grey Porsche 911 Carrera when the smash occurred at roughly 5pm on the B954 between Alyth and Meigle. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Tributes have poured in for the John on social media, who was a keen cyclist and well known in the Arbroath community.

Posting to Facebook, John Bremner of local cycling group Angus Bike Chain CC wrote: "Moments before leaving for this morning’s club ride I was very saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic death of former ABC CC member John Carswell. John was one of those infectiously enthusiastic people who got fully stuck into whatever he was doing, be that business, bikes, boats and (sadly) cars.

"The club sends its sincere condolences to his family and many friends. He will be long remembered for his constant chat on the bike, company on the cobbles of Cheshire and Flanders and his grin and big wave as he went about the town in his van.

Rest in Peace John, gone too soon lad."

Friend Nicholas Martin wrote: "Absolutely devastated to hear this today such a great friend taken far too soon. RIP John Carswell, you always had time for me. I'll miss our conversations when we catch up.

Michelle Martin added: "Absolutely heartbreaking, I can't believe your gone. Arbroath has lost an amazing guy who always had the biggest smile."

Deborah Garbett-Heenan said: "I’m in shock! Absolutely devastating news. He was such an awesome and incredible guy. So full of fun, spirit and soul. Deepest condolences to all his family and friends!"

Police have launched an investigation into the fatal crash, which saw the road closed between Alyth and Meigle until 12pm on Sunday. No other vehicles were involved.

Sergeant Kevin Wilkie, of Perth Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing and our thoughts are with the driver’s family at this difficult time.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the car prior to the incident to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 2602 of 29 April, 2023.
