First picture of British boy, 5, who drowned in Kos swimming pool

This is the first picture of a five-year-old boy who drowned in a Greek swimming pool last weekend.

The grandparents of Theo Treharne-Jones are flying out to the island of Kos to support his heartbroken parents, Nina Treharne and Richard Jones, both 38.

The five-year-old's death is being described as a "tragic accident".

Neighbours described Theo as a 'lovely young boy' and said news of his death was 'absolutely heartbreaking'.

Theo, from Cefn Coed, near Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, is believed to have wandered off from a group of 10 before breakfasted and went into the unattended pool.

He was found dead on Saturday morning.

The family have already faced tragedy recently with Theo's mum Nina losing her mother Patricia Winston just a few weeks ago.

Close family friend Beverley Herbert, 40, said: "Nina and her sister Sara were devastated when Pat died and they said they all needed a holiday to cheer them up.

"They wanted to spend time together as a family and remember Pat. So the two sisters, their partners and their children all went to Greece for a break."

She added: "Losing your child in any circumstances is every parent's worst nightmare but to lose a child like this is absolutely heartbreaking."

Another neighbour said: "It is absolutely heartbreaking news. They are such a lovely family and the two boys are real sweeties.

"They are a really close family. Nina's mum died recently and this is even more devastating for them.

"My thoughts and best wishes are with them."

The family were staying at the Atlantica Holiday Village in north Kos, on a package holiday with tour operator TUI.

The tragedy is said to have happened at the Atlantica Holiday Village (Atlantica Hotels)

Police in Greece are investigating the tragedy and have quizzed Theo's parents and hotel staff over his death.

A spokesman for TUI said: "We are aware of the tragic incident at the Holiday Village Kos, Greece and our thoughts are with the family.

"Our team in resort is currently supporting the family and we will continue to assist in whatever way we can.

"The safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff is our primary concern and our dedicated resort team is working with the authorities and hoteliers.

"As the matter is currently still under investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office official said: "We are supporting the family of a British child who died in Kos, Greece, and our staff are in touch with the local authorities."
