Brit businessman shot dead in Argentina robbery in front of stepson is pictured

This is the first picture of a British businessman who was shot dead during .

Matthew Gibbard, 50, was blasted at point-blank range as he tussled with two gun-toting masked men in Buenos Aires at 11am yesterday.

His stepson Stefan Zone, 28, was also shot during the incident but survived with serious injuries.

The incident happened outside £350-a-night five star Faena Art Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The attackers try to rob them of their possessions and money, but are met with fierce resistance by the two men.

Cameras capture the thugs trying to rip the bags from their victims' hands before shots are fired.

It is believed that the family had just touched down in the city when they were targeted and followed by their assailants.

A spokesman for the Faena Art Hotel said: "We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims."

Police have said tourists being followed from the airport is an increasing problem with many foreign visitors, who arrive late in the year for the winter sun, being targeted.

Last December, Swedish tourist Christoffer Persson was shot during an attempted robbery, and his leg subsequently amputated due to his injuries.

Days later, a US tourist was hospitalised after a violent assault during which his camera was stolen.

Puerto Madero, where the murder took place, is the redeveloped former city docks, hailed as one of the most successful urban regeneration projects in the world, attracting huge foreign investment, young professionals, and luxury tourism.

More than 111,000 British nationals visited Argentina in 2018, according to the Foreign Office, which said most visits are "trouble-free".
