First look at the £7m new office complex coming to Ebbw Vale

Work on a £7m scheme to create new office and workshop space in Ebbw Vale is underway - and officials say it could bring 100 jobs to the area.

Construction firm Kier are building the two projects - which will be spread a quarter of a mile apart on Mill Lane.

The first will consist of three steel framed buildings that will cater for nine businesses in total.

Developers say these "hybrid units" will provide low running energy costs for occupants and have "solar controls as well as natural ventilation".

Each building will have a shared entrance lobby and auxiliary spaces, and the light industrial units will all feature a small office space as well as a warehouse area.

Developers will also create a new vehicle access to Lime Avenue, along with a car park catering for 40 vehicles, and electric charging points and bike storage.

A second site will feature box units, made from converted shipping containers that are two-storeys high, and provide space for 21 offices alongside communal facilities.

Councilor Jonathan Millard lives in Ebbw Vale and says the jobs created here would be greatly welcomed in the area, especially after the effects of lockdown

He said: “It's a very positive step for the community and is something that could create some brilliant opportunities for all sorts of businesses in the area. Hopefully it can create a snowball effect and encourage a lot more industry to come here as well.

"The location of the site on the former Ebbw Vale steel works is also quite poignant, as it was once one of the largest of its kind in Europe, providing hundreds of jobs to people in the area, and revolutionising the production of steel on a global scale."

Jason Taylor, the operations director for Kier Regional Building Wales, also talked up the site's potential.

He added: “We are proud to be working with Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council to deliver this hybrid scheme that will provide local businesses with a flexible working space in Ebbw Vale."

It is hoped the scheme will be finished by the end of the year.
