First half Chelsea player ratings vs Aston Villa – Lewis Hall sharp, Omari Hutchinson a threat

Marcus Bettinelli

Had little chance of stopping the Villa opener after being left exposed. Did well to push wide a later attempt from Ollie Watkins. 6

Josh Brooking

Has got forward well in the opening period and had an effort deflected wide. Been a good outlet when Chelsea have needed one. 6

Alfie Gilchrist

Brought into the side late on with Trevoh Chalobah stepping out, Gilchrist was a little overeager in trying to win the ball in midfield in the build-up to Villa's goal. Has largely done well up against a senior international forward in Watkins. 6

Bashir Humphreys

Like his Development Squad partner, Humphreys was caught out of position in the lead-up to McGinn's strike. He's used the ball well, though. 6

Marc Cucurella

Dragged across the Villa's opener after the Chelsea defence was pulled out of shape. Hasn't offered too much in the final third as yet. 6

Jorginho

The Italian has marshalled the midfield and allowed his two younger counterparts to get forward. Hasn't had as much of the ball as he would like. 6

Lewis Hall

Used as a wing-back in his two outings prior to the World Cup break, Hall was brought into the midfield and showcased his on-the-ball quality and ability to get between both boxes. Looks comfortable against an experienced Villa side. 7

Charlie Webster

Out of contract in the summer and with a host of clubs across Europe interested, this was an opportunity for Webster to catch the eye. Started as a number eight, there were several sharp passes to progress the ball and plenty of effort. 6

Omari Hutchinson

Produced the standout moment of the first half from a Chelsea perspective. A long pass forward from Hall was collected by Hutchinson and he skipped beyond two challenges before rattling the post. The 19-year-old has looked sharp. 7

Armando Broja

Broka was on the fringes of the game in the early stages but did see a shot blocked. Unfortunately, a collision with Ezri Konsa resulted in Broja suffering a painful knee injury and being stretched off. Chelsea will hope it's not as serious as it appeared. N/A

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Started out on the left flank but moved into the centre after Broja's injury, Aubameyang didn't have too much to work with in the opening period. Forced Robin Olsen into a save with a tame shot from the edge of the box. 6

Substitutes

Dion Rankine (for Armando Broja, 23)

Brought on and deployed from the left. Struggled to get on the ball but his pace was a threat. 6
