First footage from the scene as police close off Byker street

Police have closed a Byker street after a "large" part of the Key Club wall collapsed.

Potts Street has been taped off by officers, while Northumbria Police insist the measures have been taken as a "precaution".

"Someone text me saying the Key Club is crumbling, and I thought they were joking," said one local.

"But then I came down the road and there was a canny sized cordon near it."

The venue is also known as the Byker and Heaton Union Club, and has been a favourite on Shields Road for decades.

A Nothumbria Police spokesperson added: “Shortly before 1.30pm today (Monday) we received a report that a large piece of a wall had fallen off the Key Club in Byker.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene and Potts Street has been closed as a precaution. It is not believed that anyone has been injured.”

ChronicleLive contacted the venue for comment.
