Emergency services attended the fire on Allendale Road in Walker on Saturday morning.

Both Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called out with police closing off the road.

Neighbour and passer-bys were urged to avoid the area while the fire was tackled with six fire engines on the scene.

Footage from the scene shows police guarding a cordon as firefighters dealt with the scene.

The roof of the community centre also appeared to have been destroyed in the blaze.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire service are in attendance at a large incident on Allendale Road, Walker in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

"Six pumping appliances in attendance with a number of special appliances also.

"Avoid the area if at all possible."

Plumes of smoke could be seen filling the air as parts of the road were closed off from the public.

A local resident who did not want to be named described the scene and said: "I saw the smoke at about 7am while watering my garden.

"I watched it for 30 seconds or so to see where it looked like it was coming from went back inside to grab a phone and called the fire brigade.

"The smoke was getting worse and the appliance pulled up as I was calling."

Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have both been approached for more details.
