What’s new: The first two flights repatriating Chinese students from the U.S. arrived in China on Sunday, Caixin has learned.
The chartered planes carrying nearly 400 minors landed in the cities of Guangzhou and Shanghai. The trips were completed only one week after the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. started to gauge Chinese students’ desire to return.
What’s the background: As the U.S. has been heavily hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, many Chinese students there want to fly home, especially with the summer vacation approaching and some students’ visas expiring soon.
Of the more than 400,000 Chinese students in the U.S., about 90% of them were still in the country, according to a statement (link in Chinese) from the Chinese embassy on April 3, adding that at that time three Chinese students in the U.S. had been infected, including one who had already recovered.
