Firefighters tackle major factory fire in Keysborough, in Melbourne's south-east

Dozens of firefighters are battling a major blaze at a plastics factory in Melbourne's south-east.

Fire crews were called early this morning to Olive Grove in Keysborough where the blaze was burning out of control.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Paul Foster said the large amount of plastic onsite made the situation challenging for fire crews.

"If the fire is quite intense, as this one was, it can result in things like wall collapse and roof collapse quite early in a fire, which obviously presents a safety risk to firefighters," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"As we knock down the fire, the smoke plume will drop lower and lower to the ground and make things a bit more difficult for people around the area."

The fire was brought under control after 8am.

The fire in Keysborough follows several other major blazes in the past week.

On Sunday night, the Bright Moon Buddhist Temple in Springvale was devastated by fire.

A blaze last Tuesday night destroyed a Supercheap Auto store in Epping, in Melbourne's north.

More than 100 firefighters were called to that fire, which also badly damaged a Cash Converters store.
