Firefighters tackle Leeds blaze started by tumble dryer

Fire crews from two stations in Yorkshire tackled a blaze started by a tumble dryer in the basement of a domestic property. The crews from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's Leeds and Hunslet stations were rushed out after a 999 call concerning the fire at a property in Euston Mount, Holbeck, late last night (Monday April 3).

Firefighters used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels as they extinguished the blaze, then employed "positive pressure ventilation" for smoke clearance. The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service revealed that the property was fitted with smoke alarms, which helped to give an early warning of the incident.

It said: "Fire involving dryer in the basement of a domestic property. 4 breathing apparatus, 2 hose reels and positive pressure ventilation used by fire service personnel for smoke clearance. Property was fitted with working smoke alarms at time of incident."

The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says that the easiest and best way to protect yourself and your family from fire is with a smoke alarm. "We know that you are seven times more likely to die in a fire if you don’t have working smoke alarms in your home," it says. It recommends:

  • Fit at least one alarm on every level of your home.
  • Test your alarms weekly; use a broom handle or walking stick if you cannot reach them.
  • If your alarm starts to emit a regular ‘chirp’, replace the battery or detector immediately.
  • Clean your alarms regularly, using your vacuum cleaner or a feather duster, to remove excessive dust.
  • Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for further advice.
  • Offer to test the smoke alarms of any older family members, neighbours, or friends who may need help to do so.
