Fire breaks out at recycling centre as emergency crews rush to scene

A FIRE has broken out at a recycling centre in Inverclyde.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at Inverclyde Council's recycling and waste centre on Pottery Street in Greenock on Saturday morning.

Three appliances are at the scene of the blaze, including one high reach appliance.

Videos shared on local Facebook group Inverclyde Community & Road Watch showed huge plumes of smoke erupting from the site at around 10.15am.

Police said they were alerted to the blaze at around 11.30am on Friday.

Several road closures are in place on East Hamilton Street at Pottery Street, Ratho Street and Gibshill Road, with a diversion in place via Gibsill Road.

Police Scotland said there is no wider risk to the public but urged people to avoid the area and to keep doors closed.

A Police Scotland statement reads: "Emergency services are in attendance at a fire at a recycling centre on Pottery Street in Greenock, which was reported to police around 11.30am on Saturday, 24 May, 2025.

"East Hamilton Street is closed at Pottery Street, Ratho Street and Gibshill Road.

"A diversion is in place via Gibshill Road.

"There is no wider risk to the public. Local residents are advised to close all windows and doors as a precaution and members of the public are asked to avoid the area."
