Fire breaks out at derelict property near Calderstones Park

A fire broke out at a building located on Harthill Road, near Calderstones Park, in the second incident on the street in two days.

Firefighters attended Beechley House, which is a Grade II listed building and former nursing home, on Monday, May 3.

Two engines arrived on the scene at 3:27pm and discovered a fire on the ground floor of the two-storey building.

No injuries were reported, however, following a joint investigation involving Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and Merseyside Police, it is believed the fire was started deliberately.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

It is the second fire in a week at premises located on Harthill Road after another blaze at the much-loved children’s attraction Merseyside Live Steam and Model Engineer on Sunday, May 2.

A blaze ripped through the clubhouse of the popular children’s miniature railway ride attraction, which police believe was started deliberately.

Merseyside Police is appealing for information following the second suspected arson attack on the street in less than a week.

There is no suggestion that these incidents are linked.

Community Policing Inspector Neil Birkett said: “Starting a fire deliberately in this manner is utterly irresponsible, putting our communities at risk and placing an unnecessary strain on our already overstretched emergency services.

“Thankfully the fire service extinguished the fire before anyone was harmed but this reckless disregard for people and property is simply not acceptable in Merseyside and, rest assured, we are determined to identify those responsible.

“If you saw anything or anyone suspicious in the Harthill Road area on Monday please come forward as your information could help assist us with enquiries.

“Whether you contact us directly or anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers, your information will be acted upon.”
