Devastating moment Derek cries to Kate Garraway he 'can't go on' - leaving fans in tears

Heartbroken viewers were left in tears this evening as Kate Garraway spoke to husband Derek as he cried that he "can't go on".

The GMB presenter, 53, appeared on a new ITV documentary tonight as she shared her difficult year since Derek, also 53, contracted coronavirus in March 2020.

Kate spoke about Derek, who has lost eight stone since his hospitalisation, and his "worryingly unpredictable" mental state which has led to some distressing FaceTime calls.

Derek has spent the last 12 months in hospital and was placed into a medically induced coma.

The author, who has been described as having the worst Covid infection than any living patient, regained minimal consciousness in July and uttered his first word "pain" in October.

Appearing in a new ITV documentary tonight highlighting their struggles and successes through the tough year, Kate says: "While in many ways, Derek is showing signs of improvement, his mental state is worryingly unpredictable."

In a heartbreaking moment on the documentary, Derek is seen sitting in his hospital bed as he tells Kate on FaceTime: "Kate, there's no way out. There's no way out."

"There's not way out in terms of what?” she replies.

"I've got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it," says Derek.

Kate asks: “As in die?”

“Yes," he says.

Kate repeats: “No, no.”

Derek begins to cry as he says: “I don't know how to cope, I don't know how to cope.”

But Kate remains firm: “You don't know how to cope with it. OK. I know you feel like you're trapped in your head and it's terrifying. But you're coming home, you're coming back to your life and you will be the person, even better than you were before. You will be.

“I will find a way to make it better. Okay. I promised you that I would save you and I'm gonna save you I will find a way, but you just have to hang in there.”

Fans took to Twitter to comment, with one tweeting: "Oh god what heartbreaking scenes. Please hang in there. #FindingDerek."

While another commented: "Absolutely broken watching this #FindingDerek."

A third wrote: "Oh my God, poor Derek. I don't think we can even possibly imagine what kind of torture he must be going through. It's awful how much this virus seems to be affecting him. #FindingDerek."
